What the science says
Seven questions developed to screen for anxiety symptoms and assess their severity over the past two weeks.
The research
Spitzer and colleagues studied 2,740 adults at 15 primary care clinics in the United States. Of these, 965 had an interview with a mental health professional.
What the test explores
The frequency of seven anxiety symptoms. Answers give a score from 0 to 21, with four symptom levels; the score alone cannot diagnose an anxiety disorder.
The version offered
The unchanged “French for France” and “English for the UK” forms distributed by ECFS. The English interface uses US English.
What to keep in mind. The initial study involved adults attending primary care. Its findings do not automatically apply to every population or translation. The GAD-7 does not cover every form of anxiety.

Sources and terms of use
Questions and choices use the published GAD-7 “English for the UK” form distributed by ECFS, unchanged, with a US English interface. French uses the published “French for France” form. Both have seven questions about two weeks; this experience is intended for adults. Reading aids and result explanations are editorial content added by mind., separate from the questionnaire.
